Brief Personal History
Charles Herget was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1937, in the area now known as South Central LA, the youngest of five children of Anton and Blanche Morton Herget.
He attended public schools in Los Angeles, graduating from high school in 1955.
He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in Engineering and graduated with a BS degree in 1959.
After graduation, he went to work at Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City. He continued graduate work at UCLA while working at Hughes and received a Ph D in 1967.
In 1964, he married Marlene Sternberg, an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles City School District. In 1967, they had their first child, a daughter, Laura.
In 1969, he and his family moved to Ames, Iowa, where he took a position on the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University. In 1970, they had their second child, a son, Edward.
In 1978, he and his family moved to Livermore, California, where he took a position with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).
He and Marlene were divorced in 1984.
In 1993, he accepted an incentive for early retirement from LLNL.
In 1994, he married Therese Hunter, an escrow officer and real estate agent.
In 1998, he obtained a real estate license and began working in real estate.
In 2003, he and his wife moved to Alameda, California, where they now live and conduct a real estate business together, Help-U-Sell Hunter Herget Real Estate.
